Synopsis of the Chapter
Joshua designates six cities of refuge, three on this side, and three beyond the Jordan.

2. SEPARATE THE CITIES OF REFUGE, — Hebrew: cities of refuge, to which one who has killed someone involuntarily and by chance may flee, as the Lord commanded, Numbers 35 and following, where I explained these things at length.
Verse 6: Until the High Priest Dies ¶
6. UNTIL HE STANDS BEFORE THE JUDGMENT, GIVING AN ACCOUNT OF HIS DEED. — So that if he proves his innocence, namely that he killed by accident and unknowingly, he may be brought back to the city of refuge and remain there until the High Priest dies; but if it is clear that he killed voluntarily and deliberately, let him also be put to death.
