The Censure of Three English Divines, dwelling outside the College

The closing approbation of the Old Testament, dated 1609. The original is in Latin (see the Verbatim edition); an English rendering follows.

We the undersigned, having thoroughly read this version of the Old Testament, together with the Arguments of the Books and of the chapters, and with the Annotations and Recapitulations inserted in their proper places, find nothing that is repugnant to the Catholic Faith or to good morals: but on the contrary we find the Translation faithful, and the rest learned and useful. Inasmuch as they set forth the exact order of the times; deduce the succession of the Church, of Pastors, and of Catholic Doctrine, from the very beginning of the world; explain the more obscure places of the sacred text; convince the heresies of this time by arguments gathered out of the very same text; and confirm well-nigh all the doctrines of the Catholic Church. And therefore we judge that it may be published with the greatest profit to the readers, if it shall be the good pleasure of the ordinary Censors of Books to approve the same. 1609.
